Mania – Track 5

Blake Meahl wrote the music for “Mania” knowing this would be about my struggle with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. It’s dynamic doom clocks in at 8:43.

I wrote vocal melodies and lyrics that frightened and challenged me, that forced me to come face to face with my demons. Now everyone knows, not only my band mates. And that is some kind of strange freedom.

This is all I can say about “Mania” right now. Read the lyrics.

Mania

I can’t remember what happened last night
Can’t the light, last forever
What happened last night

If you ever spent a night in my head
By the morning you’d be dead
It’s getting harder every time to pretend
I’m getting harder to defend

I lose control, she takes hold
My spine distorts, the face you’ve known morphs
Violence comes next, I see red
I tried to stay sane for ya, but I’m ruled by Mania

I wake up feeling that this will be the day
All my addictions fade away
It never lasts, I will find an excuse
This Crone inside me rules

I lose control, she takes hold
My spine distorts, the face you’ve known morphs
Violence comes next, I see red
I tried to stay sane for ya
But I’m ruled by Mania

I lose control, I lose control
She takes hold, I lose control

I can’t remember
What happened last night
Can’t the light, last forever

I lose control, she takes hold
My spine distorts, the face you’ve known morphs
Violence comes next, I see red
I tried to stay sane for ya
But I’m ruled by Mania

Violence comes next, I see red
I tried to stay sane for ya
But I’m ruled by Mania

(Warning: This shit is heavy)

I WANT TO WANNA WAKE UP – Track 4

There are songs on Static that were very cathartic. “I Want To Wanna Wake Up” is one of those. I recently shared my life-long struggle with various mental illnesses in Revolver Magazine and had planned to do so on the third Huntress album. Since we signed to Napalm Records, I knew that Spell Eater and Starbound Beast would be stepping stones to Static – the final album in the Huntress/Napalm trilogy. The title “I Want To Wanna Wake Up” came from Blake Meahl (guitarist). He and I were writing one album a year, recording between non-stop touring and band members were overwhelmed with the pace. We were tired.

The music told another tale to me; it triggered memories of my battle with multiple personality disorder, now known as dissociative identity disorder. I lived my twenties shifting between identities uncontrollably. The most notable was “Penelope Tuesdae,” a name I created as a nightlife persona. However, this identity developed into a dangerous mutation of who I really am. I spent 10 years fighting to shed her. I was high-functioning and successful, also diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. I refused medications…until I was hospitalized after something very bad happened.

In February 2001, I remember sitting on my sofa and gazing down at my breasts. I was sore and felt sick. Within moments clarity returned and terror took hold when I realized I had breast augmentation surgery, but could not remember doing so. I was living as another person and making life altering changes to my body. I had breast implants and I never wanted them. She did. The surgery cost $8000, which I had unknowingly charged to my credit card.

The lyrics for “I Want To Wanna Wake Up” reflect my struggle with DID. “Since the day I was born, I transform…mutations and the sadness turning brings, I want to wanna wake up.” I’m now awake, I’m in control, I’m medicated. Life is weird and wonderful!

Fun fact (cuz we need some fun after all that): Blake Meahl wrote the music for “I Want To Wanna Wake Up” and the working title was “Boogie Cookies!”

I Want To Wanna Wake Up

I have dreams of what I used to be
Lifetimes fail and fall
I always leave them all behind

I’m in pain but I hurt you worse
Save yourself from me, stop the torture and deceit

Since the day I was born, I transform

I’m packing it up
I Want To Wanna Wake Up
Bound to the trouble that I’ve made
I Want To Wanna Wake Up
I can’t get away

Years drift by and I forget
How to play the game
I will find another name

No regrets, I want revenge on my head

I’m packing it up
I Want To Wanna Wake Up
Bound to the trouble that I’ve made
I Want To Wanna Wake Up
I can’t get away

Shaft-shifting life away
Mutations and the sadness turning brings
I Want To Wanna Wake Up

I’m in pain but I hurt you worse
Save yourself from me, end the torture finally

Since the day I was born, I transform

I’m packing it up
I Want To Wanna Wake Up
Bound to the trouble that I’ve made
I Want To Wanna Wake Up
I can’t get away

Shaft-shifting life away
Mutations and the sadness turning brings
I Want To Wanna Wake Up

12 Days of Static: Brian (3)

BRIAN – Track 3

“Brian” will be our third single, after the release of Static. There’s a lot of curiosity surrounding our song “Brian.” Who is he? Brian is my friend, an eccentric old man who wandered into my life unexpectedly and brought magic along with him. I’ve encountered kindred souls, but none quite like Brian. He’s so far out. Brian can’t hear very well, so he wears headphones and holds a small microphone to my mouth every time we speak. It feeds back with high pitched shrieks and he doesn’t notice. He never visits without a gift, usually crystals and silver coins representing Catholic Saints of protection. I call him my “forceful savior.”

IMG_20150301_201311

When I wrote the lyrics and vocal melodies, it was effortless, like a stream of consciousness: “Brian finds me, brings me stars captured in glass.” The music is dynamic, shifting between a controlled frenzy and somber ballad. I had fun recording vocals, I wrote to showcase my range and harmonies. Our producer Jim Rota is the vocalist and guitarist for Fireball Ministry – he sang lower harmonies on the chorus. “Brian” is a favorite of both Jim and Paul Fig (producer/engineer), this one was infectious during recording, all of us waking up and going to bed with it in our heads.

“Brian” boasts tasteful guitars from Eli Santana and Blake Meahl, with a hint of black metal. I’m so impressed with their playing on Static. This song possesses an intangible darkness that Huntress has honed and owned from our first recordings. Yet it’s unlike anything we’re ever written…the natural evolution of the band is captured within “Brian.”

Fun fact: Eli Santana wrote the music for “Brian” and the working title was “Gargamel Gibson!”

Brian

Brian finds me
Brings me stars captured in glass
Coins of silver

Forceful savior
Saint of protection for later
Awkward wizard

Your visions
Zap messages through your hair
Keep me in your prayers

Brian
Obsession leads you to me
I want you to hang around
Something lost has been found

Watching colors
Float in the corners of the past
Counting memories

There’s a sadness
I feel deep within your madness
We share the torture

Your visions
Zap messages through your hair
Keep me in your prayers

Brian
Obsession leads you to me
I want you to hang around
Something lost has been found

You appear and never warn
Like a strange and golden storm
Pockets filled with gifts for me

All the crystals from Brazil
Birds of prey on windows sills
In the places I see in my dreams

Your visions
Zap messages through your hair
Keep me in your prayers

Brian
Obsession leads you to me
I want you to hang around
Something lost has been found

Brian…obsession leads you to me
Brian…don’t you ever leave me

FLESH – Track 2

“Flesh” is the first single off our new album Static, and the first lyric video Huntress has ever done. It was released July 31st, 2015. It’s catchy and hard rock, it’s lusty and bloody, a blackened-party metal make out song. When my bandmates brought me the killer composition, I wrote the lyrics as my storyline unfolded like bizarre film noir. A female serial killer who would transform into a demonic seamstress, preying upon women. She desires their flesh for fashion. Once again, I’ve collaborated with the immensely talented Vance Kelly to bring the story of “Flesh” to life. Our telepathic artistic connection has created a twisted romantic lyric video for a summer of lust.

I wrote the lyrics and vocal melodies to “Flesh” in our tour van, outside of the Huntress rehearsal studio in North Hollywood. Our producers Paul Fig and Jim Rota were having a pre-production session with the boys. It was one of the last songs I had to write, but I couldn’t quite grasp it. I was under the gun and sometimes that pressure makes my songwriting better. I’d been watching a lot of Dexter and it suddenly came to me…this song was about a female serial killer who pervs out on the flesh of her victims. Cool! I wrote the vocal melodies and lyrics in 20 minutes.

The vocal approach on this song was guided by Paul and Jim, who really wanted “Flesh” to be a great single. I used a cleaner tone on the choruses with lots of harmonies. Originally the lyrics in the chorus were: “Hunt you like a wild beast, Turn you out for my release…fucking on your Flesh.” Jim made me change those lyrics (begrudgingly) to: Hunt you like a wild beast, Turn you out for my release…Craving your Flesh.” Radio friendly, baby!

Fun fact: Eli Santana wrote the music for “Flesh” and the working title was “Terminus.”

Flesh

Nightmares don’t trouble me
I wear them on my sleeve
Like a wet stain

Red skies in the morning
Signals my final warning
Predicting your pain

Hey, I’m not the same
I’m in lust
Feel me bust

Hunt you like a wild beast
Turn you out for my release
Craving your Flesh

What I’d give to watch you cry
Sister, I ain’t gonna lie
Unless it’s on your Flesh

Watching you walk alone
I call you on the phone
Heavy breathing

Night covers me
It’s all clear
I want your fear

Hunt you like a wild beast
Turn you out for my release
Craving your Flesh

What I’d give to watch you cry
Sister, I ain’t gonna lie
Unless it’s on your Flesh

You on my shelf
I can’t control myself

Fall to your knees
Crawl to me

What makes me want you bad?
Well, I can’t stop craving your Flesh

Hunt you like a wild beast
Turn you out for my release
I’m coming
Craving your Flesh

What I’d give to watch you cry
Sister, I ain’t gonna lie
Unless it’s on your Flesh

Your Flesh
On your Flesh

“Sorrow” poster by Phil Mucci, available in print & signed on our PledgeMusic page: http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/huntress/bundles/15115

SORROW – Track 1

The album opens with “Sorrow” – this will be the first live action music video for Static premiering this month on Loudwire.com (date TBA).

Fans have come to expect sensational Huntress music videos, they’re a huge part of our legacy. Phil Mucci directed “Sorrow” and Starbound Beast’s “Zenith” (2013), which garnered several awards, including a Revolver Magazine Golden Gods nomination (2014) alongside Metallica, Lamb of God & Behemoth. Not bad for a little underground metal band from Highland Park! Phil Mucci brought us the treatment for “Sorrow,” inspired by 1970’s lesbian vampire films. Jennifer Luna (Sewceress) created beautiful costumes. So much time and money went into making this happen, we raised funds on our Pledge Music page where fans have been part of this journey from the start.

The lyrics for “Sorrow” are a reflection of me as an angsty teenager obsessed with death and Dracula. Yeah, I had a poster of Gary Oldman in my bedroom. Most of the lyrics for “Sorrow” were written when I was 17: “Forever I’m your slave, chained to the wet lawn of your grave. Sorrow, can’t let go. I’m done with getting old, all I got is breath to hold.”

I wanted to write a melancholy thrasher, with my sadness and fury entwining. We intentionally wrote with “reverse prosody” as the guide, standard prosody being where the emotion of the lyrics and the sound of the music are somehow matched or aligned. If you get the prosody wrong it can make the song fall flat, but if you intentionally reverse it for affect you can get some great results. I learned this from my pal Angus Clark, fellow nerd and guitarist of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Daredevil Squadron.

Fun fact: Huntress always uses working titles for every song. Typically Blake Meahl will write music, I’ll vibe out on it, then write lyrics and vocal melodies. “Sorrow” was first titled “Kitten on a Dick!”

Sorrow

I’m high all the time
To keep you off my fading mind
And days slip away
Can’t keep my head or thoughts straight

Racing to death
My life is spent
Bury me

Forever I’m your slave
Chained to the wet lawn of your grave

Sorrow
Can’t let go
I’m done with getting old
All I got is breath to hold

My hate fuels the pain
I get trashed to fuck my brain
Thoughts breed regret
The future is my only threat

Sorrow
Can’t let go
Sorrow
Can’t let go
I’m done with getting old
All I got is breath to hold

Take me away from all this death

Lost in fading summer
I’ve become such a bummer
Like a suicide letter
This shit can’t get any better

Life really sucks
Someone please shut up

Give me decay
Take me away
Bury me

Forever I’m your slave
Chained to the wet lawn of your grave

Sorrow
Can’t let go
Sorrow
Can’t let go
I’m done with getting old
All I got is breath to hold

Huntress Touring Schedule Changes

Huntress Announcement From Vocalist Jill Janus:

“Two months ago I had major surgery and ever since I have been eager to get back on stage. On August 26th, Huntress played a sold-out show in Los Angeles at Loaded. The performance was incredible, my voice is strong, and I felt so happy to be back on stage. After the show, I had complications from uterine cancer surgery that left me in severe pain.

Although I am now cancer-free, I am clearly not yet healed properly. Due to doctor’s orders, Huntress will be unable to join the tour we were so looking forward to this September with Avatar, Gemini Syndrome and First Decree.

In one month, I will celebrate the return of my beast mode on the Motorhead Motorboat Cruise 9/28-10/2, as it will take one more month to properly heal from surgery. I’m so excited for the release of our new album Static on 9/25 and the amazing music video debut of “Sorrow” coming in a few weeks. Huntress will announce new tour dates soon and I can’t wait to meet our fans at many more shows to come! Sending my love to all my Creatures!”

Huntress was spawned from the preternatural union of Jill Janus with underground metal band Professor. The band thrives on thundering drums, heavy riffs, spectral solos and catchy choruses that come from the band’s musical concoction of melodic songwriting, occult science and bong rips. Huntress delivers a modern sonic attack while staying true to the roots of heavy metal, with a penchant for thrash, death and black metal.

Huntress released their buzzworthy debut album Spell Eater in 2012 on Napalm Records. One year later, the critically-acclaimed Starbound Beast became a sophomore success. Lemmy Kilmister penned lyrics for “I Want To Fuck You To Death” which quickly became a radio hit. The powerful pentad is now on the verge of releasing their third studio album titled Static on September 25, 2015. Huntress has ascended rapidly in the metal world, driven by fierce work ethic and a relentless tour schedule. They’ve supported Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Testament, Danzig, Arch Enemy, Kreator, Amon Amarth, Dragonforce, 3 Inches of Blood and have played a slew of festivals worldwide including Download Festival, The Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, Metal Fest Open Airs, Heavy MTL and Tidal Wave as headliner. This fall, Huntress joins the Mötorhead Mötorboat cruise featuring Mötorhead, Slayer, Anthrax and more, September 28-October 2. Upcoming 2015 tour dates will be announced soon!
